ROSEMONT, Ill. –Pizza Hut has increased the amount of cheese on its pan pizzas by 25 percent, a move that will require an additional 150 million pounds of milk annually to meet the change.
The project was made possible thanks to dairy scientist Nitin Joshi, a Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) employee who works onsite at Pizza Hut’s headquarters in Plano, Texas. Pan pizza is the chain’s signature product offering and the new formulations are now available at more than 6,000 restaurants nationwide. Pizza Hut is a checkoff partner. Wisconsin’s dairy community, family and friends are mourning the death of Kewaunee County dairy farmer John Page, his son-in-law and their pilot following the crash of their airplane late Thursday in rural Indiana.
Pagel and his family operate Pagel’s Ponderosa Dairy, a farm with more than 5,300 cows and 100 employees, and the Cannery Public Market in downtown Green Bay. Pagel also represented the Town of Casco on the Kewaunee County Board, president of the Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative and a founding member of the Dairy Business Association.
In addition to Pagel, his son-in-law Steve Witcpalek and pilot Nathan Saari were also killed in the crash.
“John was a cherished friend and visionary leader who helped create the cooperative and its sister organization, the Dairy Business Association. John was a champion for the dairy community who worked tirelessly to put farmers in a position to succeed,” according to a statement from the Edge.
The Pagel and Witcpalek families issued a statement Friday thanking the community for its support and asked for privacy as they wait for additional information.

By MAA There’s more good news when it comes to yogurt as part of a healthy eating pattern and improved heart health. A new study published in the American Journal of Hypertension showed that eating two or more cups of yogurt a week is associated with a lower risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults who already have high blood pressure.
The large-scale observational study, funded by the dairy-farmer-founded National Dairy Council (NDC) and others, is the first of its kind to examine the relationship between eating yogurt and reduced CVD risk in hypertensive adults. Sam and Jenn Zimmerman from Ringle, Wis., received a National Outstanding Young Farmer Award.
The Zimmermans operate On-Q Holsteins, where they raise 164 milking cows and 180 Holstein heifers on 450 acres. The use of genetic testing, embryo transfer, in-vitro fertilization and the use of sexed semen, have allowed them to isolate the “elites” in their herd and grow the genetics very quickly. This has produced cows scoring excellent, a recent Dam of Merit, 2016 progressive genetics award winner from the Holstein Association and five embryos being exported to France.
The other three national winners were: Robby and Stephanie Bevis from Arkansas, Ian and Val Plagge from Iowa and Nick and Sunny Cummings from Ohio.
MANITOWOC, Wis. — After eight years of planning and dreaming, the vision set forth by a committed board of directors, staff and volunteers will become a reality when the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center (Farm Wisconsin) opens its doors this summer.
Melissa Bender, director of education and programming for Farm Wisconsin, said the state-of-the-art interactive center located south of Manitowoc will open July 28.

On Jan. 23, the City of Wausau piped 3.7 million gallons of raw, untreated human feces and waste directly into the Wisconsin River. Was this by accident? No. It was by design, as the waste was routed directly to the river by the city’s sewerage system after a pipe leading to the wastewater treatment plant was plugged. Everything worked according to plan. As city officials alluded to afterward, the waters of the Wisconsin River actually were the perfect solution to the problem, as opposed to allowing sewage to back up into some Wausau homes.
